Best of Breed & Reserve Best in Group Crufts 1983

Ch Derham Starry Night

An article taken from dog’s world 1983

Ch Derham Starry Knight was reserve in the group in 1983. He was breed by his owners Mr & Mrs Derek Hampton by Ch Western Star of Sunara ex Grasteve Penelope. The original breed judge was to be Mrs Alice Thomas who had put him up before, but she was taken ill and Mrs Catherine Sutton was the substitute –and he could have done no better under the original judge as he beat nine champions to win open dog, and he was placed reserve in the group by Mrs Suttons husband, the group captain who wrote “ a very sound little chap in excellent coat and condition with a lovely head and expression, he moved so well and really covered the ground.

In writing about the hound group at Crufts, Mary Roslin Williams points out that the only dog to beat the Dachshund was the afghan who went on to best in show. But the Dachs was not allowed to challenge for reserve BIS.

Good point this. When the certificate is awarded the second in class from which the winner comes is allowed to compete for reserve with other class winners, providing that it is the wish of the judge.

But this is not so in BIS. The winner is selected, and then reserve comes from another group. Why not best and reserve BIS from the same group if the judge thinks those two are the best?

Wouldn’t it have been exiting if the little Dachs had come into crufts big ring after Alfie had gone to the top? Don’t misunderstand this: the Crufts reserve was of the highest merit.
